The muskmelon (Cucumis melo), like watermelon, is hardly a vegetable, but it is an important truck and garden crop.
Americans refer to muskmelons merely as "melons," but that is confusing because watermelons are also loosely called "melons".
The most popular type of muskmelon in America is the small, oval, heavily netted kind commonly called a cantaloupe. All cantaloupes are muskmelons, but not all muskmelons are cantaloupes.
Muskmelon will not cross with watermelon, cucumber, pumpkin, or squash, but varieties within the species intercross freely. Muskmelon is so named because of the delightful odor of the ripe fruits.
Musk is a Persian word for a kind of perfume; melon is French, from the Latin melopepo, meaning "apple-shaped melon" and derived from Greek words of similar meaning.
The skin of a muskmelon can vary in color from creamy white to rich green, while the flesh may be white, green, golden, orange, or even almost salmon colored. As a general rule, the flesh of a muskmelon is cool and refreshing, with a sweet, flavorful juice.
The best melons are allowed to ripen fully on the vine, developing to their full sweetness potential, and can identify them by their heady aroma and a slight softness around the depression in the skin where the flower once grew.

I was travelling by train through Germany to visit my brother, who was stationed there. The conductor was very friendly, and although he spoke no English and I no German, we had a great chat using only hand signals. When he left the compartment, a woman sitting nearby asked if I spoke German. “Not a word,” I confessed.
She nodded. “That explains why you didn’t get off when he said you were on the wrong train.”
