Trout is a group name for fishes belonging in the family Salmonidae. Trout are characterized by being very sensitive to environmental disruption, and are often used as indicator species to monitor rivers and lakes. Most trout are freshwater fish, although some venture out to sea for part of their life cycle. In addition to being found wild in many parts of the world, trout are also commercially farmed for sport fishing and human consumption.
Trout is a number of species of freshwater and saltwater fish belonging to the salmoninae subfamily of the salmonidae family. Salmon belong to some of the same genera as trout but, unlike most trout, most salmon species spend almost all their lives in salt water. Trout are classified as an oily fish. The word trout is also used as part of the name of some non-salmonid fish such as Cynoscion nebulosus, the spotted seatrout or speckled trout.
Trout have elongated bodies, and a small adipose fin which grows between the dorsal and tail fins. Trout have large mouths which are carried forward, rather than lower on the head like some river fish, and can be speckled, striped, or blotched in a rainbow of colors, depending upon the species. Like most fish, trout are more pale on the underside.
Trout is available all year round from supermarkets, individual shops, fishmongers or direct from fish-farm shops. It can be purchased fresh or frozen, as fillets, steaks or whole fish and also comes in hot and cold smoked varietiesIt is also quick and easy to cook, as well as being very versatile:
